Pest Control in Rice Leaf Roller
Insecticide
Rice leaf roller is considered a major pest insect of rice, causing complete destruction on infested crops if no appropriate controls are taken during population breakout. The pest insect occurs in all rice environments and is more abundant during the hot rainy season. Leaf roller goes through four growth stages in their lives: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. The most destructive stage is the larvae stage. The voracious caterpillars feed on host crops from the inside out, spin silk and roll themselves inside the leaves to form long tubes.
To manage the rice leaf roller, the most effective technique is to target before hatching or immediately after. Comatch (Chlorfenapyr19%+Lufenuron5% SC) is one of Sunjoy Agro’ best sellers to control rice leaf roller. The combination of the two active ingredients makes the product kill insect pests quickly with its contact and stomach mode of action and gives crops long-term protection. Chlorfenapyr is a broad-spectrum insecticide. Just 1 hour after application, the pests become inactive and paralyzed. It usually takes about 1 day to reach the best control effect. The control period of Chlorfenapyr is about 7~10 days. Lufenuron is a chitin synthesis inhibitor. 2 hours after application, the pest gets anesthetized and stops feeding. It usually takes 3~5 days to fully reach the best control effect. Lufenuron has a strong ovicidal action, which gives a control period of up to 25 days.
Test Trials
Sunjoy Agro conducted more than 200 trials on the prevention and control of rice leaf rollers nationwide. For example, in Ninghai Village of Ningbo City, Sunjoy Agro used three treatments to test the control effectiveness of the rice leaf roller with drones.
Treatment A: Comatch (Chlorfenapyr19%+Lufenuron5% SC) with 50g/mu,
Treatment B: Tink 70 (Acetamiprid 70% WG) with 30g/mu
Comatch (Chlorfenapyr19%+Lufenuron5% SC) with 20g/mu
Treatment C: Grower standard control
20 infected rice leaves were picked from each treatment for every test period. A total of 60 leaves were picked. Researchers peeled off the rolled leaves to check the number of dead, live, poisoned, or empty insects.

The contact property enables Comatch to have an instant killing effect 24 hours after application. The product's strong penetration through the waxy layer of rice leaves enables Comatch to kill the leaf rollers wrapped inside. Finally, the stomach poisoning effect makes the dead insects reach the peak number after 72 hours. Since Comatch has an active ingredient of Lufenuron, the product will also have a longer duration than ordinary insecticide, reducing the number of application times and avoiding quick development of insect resistance.
