Pest Control in Citrus Rust Mite
Insecticide
The citrus rust mite, Phyllocoptruta Oleivora, also called silver mite, is an important pest of citrus in most humid regions of the world. One generation may be completed in 1 to 2 weeks in summer depending on temperature. Citrus rust mite is dark yellow, wedge-shaped, and too small to see as it is about 0.1-0.2mm in length. A hand lens is necessary to identify these tiny insects.
The rust mite feeds on leaves and fruits. Feeding destroys rind cells and the surface becomes silvery on lemons, rust-brown on mature oranges, or black on green oranges and leaves. The damaged leaves are less efficient at photosynthesis, so it also influences the flavor of the fruits, leading to low economic values.
In recent years, the occurrence of citrus rust mites on pomelo has been more severe than in previous years. In fact, the damage of rust mites on major Rutaceae plants including pomelo, oranges, and tangerines, has a tendency to increase. The reasons are as follows: first, rust mites have risen as major pest insects with the abusive use of pesticides in the past; second, farmers have little knowledge of how to prevent and control the pest; third, there are few pesticides that can effectively control the problem.
How to control?
The rust mites thrive in warm, humid conditions. Sunjoy Agro recommends growers monitor rust mites from early spring to summer. The rust mites usually develop on young leaves in early spring, appear on fruits by late spring, and reach damaging peaks in summer. If rust mites were a problem the previous year, and you find one or more infested fruit in spring, then you need to watch the orchard very closely. Growers could use a hand lens to examine the leaves and fruit surface. When the population density reaches 1-2 per lens vision, chemical controls should be carried out immediately.
Application Scenario
Mr. Ruan’s pomelo orchard uses Rallyball (Lufenuron 100g/L SC) and Synglo (Pyraclostrobin 160g/L + Tebuconazole 320g/L SC) as a solution pack to prevent and control the rust mite and enhance plant vigor in the early stage of pest outbreak. Rallyball is a highly efficient broad-spectrum insecticide. It has good control effects on rust mites, leafminers, thrips, and other resistant pests. It also has a great ovicidal effect on pest eggs. Lufenuron belongs to the chemical class of benzoylureas. It acts as an inhibitor of chitin biosynthesis of insect growth, which disturbs the formation of the epidermis of the pest insect.
Mr. Ruan sprayed Rallyball with 2000 times dilution and Synglo with 3000 times dilution on 7.15, 8.9, and 9.10. The results were satisfying. Most of the pomelo has no traces of rust mites. The fruits tasted better, the surface was refreshing, the rind cells were delicate, and the leaves were green and thicker. Rallyball can greatly reduce the population of insects and reduce the chance of outbreak, help farmers improve the quality of fruits.
